Voces paginarum: Origin and limits of the notion that most reading in antiquity and the Middle Ages was oral

We are so used to reading (beyond the initial stages) being silent that it seems strange that some scholars thought that most people in antiquity and the Middle Ages who could read, routinely read aloud, whether they were alone or in company. I will summarise when this idea arose, BALOGH József’s (1921) seminal contribution, and how later scholars have shown that it was overdone; then mention Augustine watching Ambrose read silently, and Philip and the Ethiopian (Acts of the Apostles 8: 26-39; and identify the earliest person in history said to have read silently.

Digital Literacy, Rethinking literacy and learning. A big challenge for education.

Internet is increasingly central to our daily lives: useful but also very complex. There are no editors, everybody is a writer, it is expanding every second. Reading online has become a common way to require information and to learn. This requires complex high-level skills in questioning, locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and communicating – skills that are in some cases unique to online reading and writing contexts. New definitions of literacy have to be thought of, and new skills, strategies, knowledge and behaviour related to them. What does this mean for educators, curriculum developers, librarians, parents and the society?

Reading Nest

The project “Reading Nest” of the Estonian Reading Association was born in 2004 with the aim of providing teachers with new skills on how to adjust the reading environment in pre-school and primary school. Now, cosy reading nests where one can read books (and possibly make one, too), and enjoy creative games offer a caring learning environment to children in schools, libraries, homes and elsewhere. The project is supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers, British Council and Tallinn city.

The Reading Specialist

This presentation aims to describe the course “The Reading Specialist” organised by the Associazione Literacy Italia in 2021 with the aim of training teachers in the field of reading literacy. Reading specialists are able to engage students, use a variety of good practices and apply appropriate evaluation in order to develop a reading plan in the school. The course provided teachers with resources to improve literacy across the curriculum and included the following modules: promoting reading among students, the reading specialist in school, profiling and evaluating readers, metacognitive strategies, reading motivation and book therapy, creative writing, school library and digital library, children’s literature, disciplinary literacy, digital reading and digital storytelling. The evaluation of the course was assessed through a quantitative questionnaire.

Pandemic-related-homeschooling as a possible entrance into a culture of writing of early writers

In the first weeks of homeschooling during the pandemic 2020, the reading and writing activities of 25 students from a German primary school were closely observed. Weekly handwritten letters to their teachers meant for some students a starting point of a new level of engagement with the culture of writing. In my presentation, I will give some insight into the setup of the letter activities as well as some reflection of the activities.

Learning: Life-Long and life-Wide

The presentation will cover two possible points of interest for all interested in adult learning. The first will dive into the biggest promotional campaign in the area of education in Slovenia, the lifelong learning weeks, and all the tentacles in has developed in 26 years of existence. The second will bring forward some concerning data on education for Slovenia, brief mentioning of the Delors’ 4 pillars of education and the never-ending possibilities of informal learning in a desperate cry for more holistic life-long and life-wide learning and education.
