The 38th HSN Conference took place on 28–29 November 2025 at Tilburg University. I served as a co-organiser and track leader for Digital Literacy and Didactics. Further details are available in this post.


2024

24–26 June 2024 Attended the European Conference on Literacy in Crete, Greece, as a member of FELA and a board member of ELINET. Presented at the second ELINET Symposium on digital literacy, titled “New Conceptual Tools for Understanding and Researching Digital Information”, alongside Sari Sulkunen, Colin Harrison, and Sandra Langer. 22–23 November 2024 The 37th HSN Conference on Dutch Language Education was held at Erasmus University College Brussels. I was a co-organiser and track leader for Digital Literacy. For more information, see this post.

Writing Assignment Commissioned by the Dutch Language Didactics Research Group (WODN) of Levende Talen to write the section on Digital Literacy and Dutch for the Digital Handbook of Dutch Language Didactics.

2–4 April 2020 Keynote Speaker at the 6th International Conference “Reading and Literacy in Education and Culture: A Digital Dimension”, National Library of Russia, Moscow. Title: Digital Literacy, Rethinking Literacy and Learning: A Big Challenge for Education and Culture. Postponed due to COVID-19.

16–21 January 2020 4th Baltic Sea Conference on Literacy, Tallinn, Estonia. Attended as co-chair of the Thematic Working Group on Digital Literacy (ELINET) and delivered a presentation on Digital Literacy and the Role of Language Teachers.

5 December 2019 Guest lecture on Digital Literacy and Dutch Language Teaching at the teacher training programme of the University of Amsterdam (UvA).

December 2019 Began a two-year development project at KWC Culemborg (Sept 2019–Sept 2021) with a teacher development team to create a digital literacy curriculum for VMBO classes 1–3, integrated into Dutch language lessons, with a cross-curricular focus.

22–23 November 2019 HSN Conference 2019, Windesheim University of Applied Sciences, Zwolle. Served as track chair for Innovation and Digital Literacy. Also co-presented a workshop with Ferdi Schrooten on the educational project Hidden Family History. Further information: HSN Conference.

4–7 August 2019 21st European Conference on Literacy, Copenhagen. Served as chair of the ELINET Symposium on Digital Literacy and presenter. Also a member of FELA and co-organiser of the conference.

8 May 2019 Workshop with students at Taallab Fontys University of Applied Sciences, Child and Education.

15–18 April 2019 Hidden Family History project at Huizermaat. A research week for students combining research skills, digital literacy, and writing education.

28 January 2019 Workshop on Digital Literacy at Aeres University of Applied Sciences, Wageningen.

November 2018–April 2019 Supported the Teacher Development Group for Dutch at Goois Lyceum. Goal: Develop a lesson series for 4th-year HAVO/VWO students focusing on online source skills (searching, finding, analysing), understanding complex websites, writing synthesis texts, and creating a final product (website and text).

22 November 2018 Guest lecture at UvA ILO, Dutch Teacher Training Programme on digital literacy and language education.

21 November 2018 Guest lecture at Tilburg University, Dutch Teacher Training Programme on digital literacy and language education.

20 November 2018 A documentary, Dead Blood Relatives, about the Hidden Family History educational project in Valkenswaard, was broadcast by KRO/NCRV on the programme Roderick zoekt licht. Omroep Brabant followed with a broadcast during the Christmas holidays.

31 October 2018 The curriculum.nu Development Group for Digital Literacy organised a feedback session at the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. Topic: The Integration of Digital Literacy Within Other Subjects. I chaired the Digital Literacy and Dutch table.

July 2018 Published article: Digital Literacy: A New Challenge for Language Support and Language Education in Remediaal, a journal for remedial teachers.

22 June 2018 Digital Literacy Conference by Kennisnet at the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, Hilversum. Delivered a presentation on practical applications of digital literacy and the relationship between traditional and digital literacy. See this post.

15 June 2018 Attended the Media Literacy Expert Group meeting of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology in Brussels.

16 April–31 May 2018 Ferdi Schrooten and I led the Hidden Family History educational project for the fourth time, this time at Were Di in Valkenswaard. Students conducted four days of research, followed by writing assignments in Dutch. A documentary about this project was broadcast by KRO on 20 November 2018. 19–21 January 2018 Attended the joint meeting of FELA (Federation of European Literacy Associations) and IDEC (International Development in Europe Committee) in Riga, Latvia, including a leadership workshop. Represented the Netherlands.

8 September 2017 Attended the UNESCO International Conference on ‘Literacy in a Digital World’ at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, as a representative of ELINET and an expert on digital literacy.

7 September 2017 Attended the Global Alliance for Literacy (GAL) Core Group Meeting at UNESCO, Paris, as an observer.

3–6 July 2017 20th European Conference on Literacy, Madrid. Member of the Scientific Committee and highlighted rapporteur for the topic: Literacy in a Digital Age: An Interesting and Big Challenge for (Language) Education. Chaired a roundtable on Digital Literacy and delivered a workshop on online literacy and language education. Book of Abstracts.

18 April 2017 Attended the Digital Literacy Circle for Secondary Education (VO) meeting by Kennisnet in Utrecht. Delivered a presentation on online literacy, digital literacy, and language education. See Slideshare.

30 March–7 April 2017 Hidden Family History project at Huizermaat, Huizen, with VWO4 students. Combined research skills, online literacy, and writing education in a meaningful and motivating project.

21–22 January 2017 Symposium on Digital Literacy, Vilnius, Lithuania. Delivered a keynote workshop on online literacy/digital literacies. Also attended meetings of the International Development in Europe Committee (IDEC) and Federation of European Literacy Associations (FELA). Represented the Netherlands.

10 December 2016 Awarded at the Microsoft Innovation Educators Forum in Skopje, Macedonia, for Innovation in Teacher-Student Collaboration Inside and Outside School. Winners: Anica Petkoska, Maya Smileski, Darko Petkoski (SEOU “Gostivar”, Gostivar) and Jeroen Clemens, Margo Adriaansens, Douwe Dijksterhuis, Cristian Hartsema (Helen Parkhurst, the Netherlands).

18–19 November 2016 30th HSN Conference on Dutch Language Education, Ghent, Belgium. Responsible for the Innovation in Education track, alongside Jordi Casteleyn (Flanders). Delivered a workshop with Ferdi Schrooten on the innovative Hidden Family History lesson module, combining online literacy, meaningful learning, and Dutch language education. Also served as co-room chair/leader for the Innovation in Education track.

20 October 2016 OMO Study Day: Masterful Encounters – Reading, Writing, Watching… on What Digitisation Does to Our Language Proficiency, Reading, Understanding of Language, and Our Brains? at Klasse Theater, Tilburg. Interviewed in a College Tour setting on digital literacy/online literacy and educational innovation by Lambert van Hoorn, Dutch teacher at Mill-Hill College and day chair.

28 September 2016 Workshop at the Reading Comprehension Conference by the CED Group on Reading and Writing in Relation to Online Literacy and Media Literacy. Presentation available for download via Slideshare.

14–16 August 2016 Workshop and chairmanship at the 3rd Baltic Sea – 17th Nordic Literacy Conference, Turku, Finland. Delivered a workshop on a survey of online literacy among teachers and chaired other workshops/presentations.

13–14 August 2016 Attended meetings of two European literacy collaborations: IDEC and FELA in Turku, Finland. Represented the Netherlands. Also gave a short presentation on the Hidden Family History project.

19 May 2016 Podcast interview with Don Zuiderman on educational innovation and online literacy, discussing various strategies for educational innovation and the challenging situation in both schools and government. Listen to the podcast.

From 1 May 2016 Member of the Media Literacy Committee of the Council for Culture. This committee is updating the 2005 Media Literacy Report, linking it to Education 2032.

3 February 2016 Two workshops on online literacy for language teachers at the MBO Maths and Language Conference of Drenthe College, Nieuw Amsterdam. Focused on awareness, linking to personal practice, and initial ideas for new practices.

1 February 2016 Willem I College, Den Bosch: Began a project with five teachers to develop, implement, and research online literacy lessons. Aim to co-write an article afterwards. Funded by the Municipality of Den Bosch, which supports language education in the modern digital age.

11 January 2016 Workshop with members of the Dyslexia Network Zwolle.

2016 School Year

  • Worked with three pilot schools: Piter Jelles/!mpulse (Leeuwarden), Vathorst College (Amersfoort), and Helen Parkhurst (Almere) on developing, reflecting, and researching.
  • Vathorst College, Amersfoort: Supported the Dutch department in integrating online literacy into the curriculum and developing learning pathways for lower and upper secondary education. Also a pilot school for online literacy implementation research.

2015

25 November 2015 Guest lecture at Tilburg University, Dutch Teacher Training Programme. Students could choose online literacy for their research and development assignments.

13–14 November 2015 29th HSN Conference on Dutch Language Education, Tilburg. Responsible for the Educational Innovation track, alongside Jordi Casteleyn (Flanders). Delivered a workshop on online literacy as a follow-up to the previous year’s workshop.

19 November 2015 Guest lecture at ILO Amsterdam, Dutch Teacher Training Programme.

25 September 2015 Workshop at the MBO Taalacademie Conference, Amersfoort.

9 July 2015 Meeting with Patrick Koning on online literacy in MBO education. Discussed the connection and coherence of online literacy and Dutch language education with his book Mediawijsheid in de klas [Media Literacy in the Classroom]. Initial ideas for curriculum innovation at Koning Willem I College, Den Bosch, and possible implementation trajectories in schools.

9 July 2015 Meeting with Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. Students could participate through design and research assignments, focusing on developing materials and assisting as research supporters. Similar discussions with the teacher training programmes at Tilburg University and UvA.

24 June 2015 Research conference: Knowing What Works with ICT in Education in Theater Diligentia, The Hague. Delivered a pitch on the sub-research question: Are Dutch Teachers Ready to Implement Online Literacy in Their Curriculum? All presentations, including my pitch, are available online.

5 March 2015 Study afternoon on online literacy and education in Torhout, West Flanders, for primary school teachers (3rd grade) and secondary school teachers.

February 2015 Inaugural lecture by Joke Voogt (UvA) on Curriculum and ICT published online. She is my PhD supervisor and mentioned my research in her lecture. A 3-minute video about the chair was also produced.

13 February 2015 Exploratory meeting with Yvonne Gerridzen, publisher of the online Dutch method Plot26, on innovative education and the expansion of literacy/online literacy.

14–15 November 2014 HSN28 Conference on Dutch Language Education, Bruges, Flanders. See blog post. A number of teachers and teacher trainers from primary and secondary education in Flanders and the Netherlands wanted to start working with online literacy. First agreement on setting up an online design environment for this purpose.

2013

6–9 August 2013 At the European Reading Conference in Jönköping, delivered an invited workshop. Pioneering researcher in the field of online text comprehension, Donald Leu, was the keynote speaker.

21 November 2013 MBO College Rijn-IJssel organised a mini-symposium on Language and Maths. Delivered a workshop by invitation.

The Network Didactics Dutch (NDN), the Flemish association for teacher trainers, provided information on my PhD research on its website, called on teachers to participate in my survey, and requested an article for their association.

29–30 November 2013 HSN 2013 Conference (Utrecht). Served as track leader and room chair for New Media and delivered a workshop with many participants.

11 December 2013 Guest lecture at the teacher training programme of Tilburg University.

2013 HSN26 Conference (Bruges, 2012): Delivered a workshop on Online Text Comprehension. HSN25 Conference (The Hague, 2011): Delivered the keynote speech (with Amber Walraven) on digital literacy.
