Introduction The European Literacy Coalition
I like to share with you the introduction of the European Literacy Coalition, an interesting and important initiative by the European Commission to strengthen literacy, using a a broad coalition of experts.
I’m also happy to be invited on behalf of the European Commission to the launch event of the European Literacy Coalition, which will take place at the Royal Flemish Theatre (KVS), Rue de Laeken 146, Brussels, on 22–23 September 2026 and to take part in this initiative.
Literacy is the foundation of learning and participation; it enables individuals to develop their potential and contribute to the social, cultural and democratic life of their communities. Yet, across Europe, many children, young people and adults lack the literacy skills they need to thrive in education, work and everyday life.
In response to this challenge, the European Commission has introduced the European Literacy Coalition as part of the Union of Skills and the Action Plan on Basic Skills adopted in March 2025.
This initiative will bring together stakeholders from diverse sectors to strengthen literacy and promote reading, to foster structured cooperation, support evidence-based policymaking, and raise awareness of Europe’s literacy challenges.
The event will gather representatives from the education, culture, employment, health, media, digital and other relevant sectors, from across Europe to endorse the Memorandum, the Coalition’s founding document developed through stakeholder co-creation initiated in Warsaw earlier this year. The event will also provide a space to discuss the Coalition’s priorities for its first year, explore opportunities for long-term cooperation, and network with peers.
