Mastodon is deel van een veel grotere Fedivers, een collectie van federatieve (ofwel onderling verbonden) servers voor webpublicaties en bestandshosting. Je kunt mij hier vinden https://mastodon.social/@jeroenclemens Ik had al eerder een account, maar ik gebruikte het nauwelijks. Maar de meeste interessante en leuke mensen gaan daar nu heen, waaronder ik.

Mastodon is een open sourcet sociaal netwerk waar mensen, net als op Twitter, profielen kunnen maken, berichten kunnen plaatsen, afbeeldingen of video’s kunnen delen en volgen. Maar in tegenstelling tot Twitter is Mastodon gedecentraliseerd en wordt het grotendeels gerund door vrijwilligers, wat betekent dat er geen hoofdbedrijf is dat het hele Mastodon-netwerk beheert.
Als je op Mastodon een account aanmaakt kan je kiezen uit heel veel servers, vaak klein en allemaal gerund door vrijwilligers, maar wel allemaal experts. Sommige willen zich organiseren rond een thema, zoals de Nederlandse mastodon.education van Eric Redegeld. Je kunt je server ondersteunen door een vrijwillige bijdrage.
Een leuke definitie van Mastodon door euobserver vind ik “ If the well-known social media companies are aggressive carnivores, Mastodon is best described as a group of small, leaf-eating animals.”. Een leuk interview met de oprichter van Mastodon vind je hier. Klein beetje hoe het ontstaan is, klein beetje hoe het werkt.

Ik heb het gevoel alsof ik weer in de jaren zestig ben (ja, zo oud ben ik al). Het geeft een gevoel van hoop, het gevoel samen iets voor elkaar krijgen, elkaar niet steeds de loef afsteken. En niet gemanipuleerd te worden door de algoritmes (die zijn daar niet) en door de grote bedrijven (het zijn kleine persoonlijke servers). We kunnen de wereld beter maken en doen dat samen. We beslissen zelf wie we volgen, en wat we te zien krijgen. Op Mastodon kom ik makkelijk in contact met gelijkgestelde zielen, mensen die activistisch/ voorlopers zijn op het gebied van onderwijs, milieu, vrouwenrechten, verbeteren van de democratie en andere belangrijke zaken. Zij blijven niet meer onder de radar, opgezet door de biljonairs. Ja, noem mij een onnadenkende jaren 60 er, een woke-er, een te romantische ziel, waar je de wereld niet mee kan redden, maar dan snap je het zelf niet.

Om af te sluiten een Toot van Wouter de Jong (@drakenvlieg@mastodon.social) ‘The thing with Mastodon is (if you have come from Twitter) that it is much slower paced than your usual social media platform, giving you more room to do other things. Maybe this is what #socialmedia should be: not a distraction from life but a reflection of life’.

Voor de meeste andere sociale media is ook een open source vervanging. Veel ga ik ook vervangen. Doe dat ook!

I was there for a few years, but hardly ever used it. But most interesting and fun people go there now, including me, that is.

Mastodon is an open source social network where, just like on Twitter, people can create profiles, post messages, share images or videos and follow. But unlike Twitter, Mastodon is decentralised and largely run by volunteers, meaning that there is no main company running the entire Mastodon network. If you create an account on Mastodon, you can choose from lots of servers, often small and all run by volunteers, but all of them experts. Some like to organise themselves around a theme, such as Eric Redegeld’s Dutch mastodon.education. You can support your server by making a voluntary contribution.

I feel like I’m back in the 1960s (yes, I’m that old). It gives a sense of hope, the feeling of getting something done together, not beating each other up all the time. And not being manipulated by the algorithms (they are not there) and by the big companies (they are small personal servers). We can make the world a better place, and we do it together. We decide who we follow, and what we get to see. On Mastodon, I easily connect with like-minded souls, people who are activists/ frontrunners on better education, the environment, women’s rights, improving democracy and other important issues. They no longer stay under the radar, set up by the billionaires. Yes, call me an unthinking 60sist, a woke-er, an overly romantic soul who can’t save the world, but then you don’t get it yourself.
